  1. 1842-1881. US flautist and poet. His Poems
  2. 1877 contain interesting metrical
  3. experiments, in accordance with the theories
  4. expounded in his Science of English Verse
  5. 1880, on the relation of verse to music. Born
  6. in Georgia, he served in the Civil War,
  7. during which he contracted tuberculosis. He
  8. subsequently studied law, which he then
  9. abandoned for music, accepting the position
  10. of first flautist in the Peabody Orchestra,
  11. Baltimore. He wrote poetry and lectured
  12. extensively until his early death.
